Award-Winning Film Locations

Last January I wrote this blog, and it was one of my reader’s favourites so I’ve given it a home on my new website. Just in time for the BAFTAs on Sunday!

Monday night saw the 77th Golden Globe Award ceremony launch awards season. And in our Peaks season for travel booking. It felt like the perfect combination for this week’s blog post of inspiration. Because no tourist with a smartphone camera can capture a destination quite like a cinematic director!

Filmed in New York City, Hustlers is a 2019 American black comedy crime drama film written and directed by Lorene Scafaria. It’s based on New York magazine’s 2015 article “The Hustlers at Scores: The Ex-Strippers Who Stole From (Mostly) Rich Men and Gave to, Well, Themselves” by Jessica Pressler.

Impressively the film was wrapped in 29 days, 5 of which they took over Show Palace Gentlemen’s Club NYC. But if that’s not on your to do list. There’s Wall Street, a helicopter tour at night or why not try a movie and TV themed bus tour?

Jojo Rabbit

The self-proclaimed anti-hate satire Jojo Rabbit Tells a story in the World War II from a young child’s perspective. Director Taika Waititi also plays the boy’s imaginary friend Adolf Hitler. Adolf comes from the mind on a 10-year-old, so naive Hitler only knows what a 10-year-old knows.

Jojo Rabbit was filmed in historical towns and villages in the Czech Republic. The interiors were built in the Barrandov Studios in Prague. Here are some of the most relevant filming locations of the movie:

  • Most of the exterior shots of the German city where the movie takes place were filmed in Žatec, a large town 50 miles northeast from Prague.
  • Small picturesque village of Ustek (also located in the Ústecký Region)
  • The Czech Film Commission reported that additional filming took place in Kytín, Dolní Beřkovice, Hořín and in the Petschek Palace in Prague

Major blockbuster films with parts filmed in the Czech Republic include Mission Impossible, Ghost Protocol, Serena, The Illusionist and Casino Royale.

Marriage Story

Netflix original the Marriage Story is an incisive and compassionate portrait of a marriage breaking up and a family staying together. From Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach and starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. Filming took place in Los Angeles and New York but premiered in Venice, Italy at the Venice Film Festival!

The Venice Film Festival or Venice International Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world and one of the “Big Three” film festivals, alongside the Cannes Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival. And it takes place in late-August and early September. In 2020 it’s 02 – 08 September. Time your city break to Italy just right and you’ll be rubbing shoulders with movie stars.

If you want to follow in their footsteps here are their most popular hotels:

  • Hotel Cipriani – The hotel is located on the island of Guidecca and can be reached via private motorboat, making it ideal for stars hoping to stay out of the prying public’s eyes.
  • Gritti Palace – Sits in a prime location, on the water just across from the Salute church, and its elegant Venetian Gothic aesthetic is consistent throughout.
  • Excelsior Hotel – the hub of activity every year at the Venice Film Festival, and this makes it both a perfect and imperfect place for celebrities to stay.
  • Hotel Danieli – The Restaurant Terrazza Danieli is almost impossible to get into not only during the festival but any other time of the year, due to the fact that it is one of the most romantic restaurants in all of Venice.

The Two Popes

The Two Popes, a 2019 biographical drama film directed by Fernando Meirelles and written by Anthony McCarten, adapted from McCarten’s 2017 play. Another Netflix exclusive the film takes place in Vatican City, Rome and a reproduction of the Sistine Chapel interior.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, as the saying goes, and it can barely be seen in a week, though a short break in Rome in 2020 will see you through the highlights. Any Rome holiday simply must include St Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum and the Galleria Borghese.

Bombshell, a 2019 American biographical drama film directed by Jay Roach and written by Charles Randolph. The film stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie, and is based upon the accounts of several women at Fox News who set out to expose CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment. And while I eagerly await my trip to the movies to see this movie, I’m dreaming of the leading stars home towns for a holiday.

Charlize Theron was born near Johannesburg, South Africa. On my bucket list is South Africa. COmbining Johannesburg with a Safari in Kruger Park to see the Big 5. Head to the Southern Cape, to the Capital Cape Town, Victoria and Port Elizabeth for a unique road trip.

And her co-stars home towns are just as magnificent, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie are from Eastern Australia. Sydney and Dalby in Queensland respectively.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Have you seen it? While it’s definitely a cinematic marvel, harking back to another era of Hollywood. I didn’t get it. There I’ve said it!

Actor Rick Dalton gained fame and fortune by starring in a 1950s television Western. But is now struggling to find meaningful work in a Hollywood that he doesn’t recognize anymore. He spends most of his time drinking and palling around with Cliff Booth, his easygoing best friend and longtime stunt double.

Hollywood as a location has very little to do in the movie. Sunny days, and warm nights feature heavily and L.A is a fantastic destination year round. It’s also vast, there’s something for every film lover here. I recommend you take the cheesy and busy sights with “real” L.A – after the Chinese Theatre and Hollywood Boulevard, head out to West Hollywood. The food scene here is immense. Or head to Venice Beach and join the Gourmet Food Truck Movement. A la the movie Chef.

Knives Out & Little Women

Knives Out is a 2019 American mystery comedy film written, co-produced, and directed by Rian Johnson. Described as a modern take on the whodunit, the film follows a family gathering gone awry, after the family patriarch’s death leads a master detective to investigate.

Filmed in locations all around Boston, Massachusetts. And Boston is perfect for a short getaway. Direct flights from regional UK airports are now available. A return from Manchester in June, costing just over £360. There’s a plethora of activities here, from the historical colonial history to the bustling metropolis it is today. It’s fantastic as a stop off on the way to Canada or as it’s own trip.

Ford Vs Ferrari

American automotive designer Carroll Shelby and fearless British race car driver Ken Miles battle corporate interference, the laws of physics and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary vehicle for the Ford Motor Co. Together, they plan to compete against the race cars of Enzo Ferrari at Le Mans.

Surprising Disney have confirmed that most of the filming was done in Southern California. Thousands of miles from where the biopic’s tale was written. But if you want to follow in the driving routes of the icons then you need to journey to Northern France, Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans, France.

We get inspiration for our next travel destinations from all kinds of places, TV shows with chefs, and entertainment personalities. And of course movies. Have any of these got you in the mood to visit? Why not let us know. You can find us on Facebook and LinkedIn.
