The Canaries are a wonderful for winter holidays but for some they can feel like the safe choice. A winter sun holiday feels so exotic and I get asked a lot “where can I go in winter that’s not the Canaries”. So here’s a list of alternatives for some winter sun this year…
Winter Holidays – Several Hours Away
What I love about this destination is how you can combine beach holidays to Mexico with day trips to the ancient Mayan ruins. And there are so many activities in and on the water. You get it all on a Mexico holiday. Sun-soaked, picture-perfect beaches, ancient history and mega-resorts that have it all.
Whether you choose the Caribbean coast with the Mayan ruins and gorgeous turquoise waters or the lush green mountains of the Pacific coast. You will not be disappointed with your winter holiday in Mexico. Heading to the West? Why not combine a few nights in Vegas, San Fran or San Diego before heading south to enjoy the laid back beaches? We love USAirtours multi-stop options – or why not think about a Princess Cruise?
We loved Florida for our winter sun break. The locals nicknamed us the UK snowbirds, an affectionate name usually reserved for the New Yorkers and Canadians that migrate south for winter sun! Although the days are shorter than the summer, you can still expect hot, hot, hot weather. Unlike the peak of summer (July & August can be very humid) it’s a dry heat, with less rain and you sweat less.
I recommend to clients all the time to visit October – March. You can sunbathe (there’s always a lounger or three), you can enjoy the theme parks more, the cooler nights mean you sleep better.
If you’re planning to include Miami, Orlando or the Keys, you can enjoy fewer crowds and competition for parking, loungers and activities.
From the temples and street food to the pristine beaches and luxury hotels, you’ve got every excuse for a holiday to Thailand. December to March is dry season for much of the country. So escape the wet and wild UK winter to the tropical destinations. For sun-worshippers the best of the weather is to the South. But it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most desired destinations.
Great news for those of you flying out of Manchester! Virgin Atlantic have added a 3rd weekly flight direct from Manchester to Barbados. This means more choice, more flexibility and hopefully more value for money.
This tiny island is a classic and has a wide array of accommodation options. You can go it alone, room only, self catering hotels, apartments etc. Right up to all inclusive 5* luxury. A winter holiday to Barbados has a cosmopolitan and historical vibe. A dash of sunshine, a sprinkling of sand and a splash of nature – holidays to Hastings might just be the best Caribbean winter holiday.
5 – 6 Hours Away
Morocco’s west coast flirts with the 20C mark during the European winter, rarely soaring above or dipping far below. So it’s ideal for those looking for pleasant weather perhaps on a short winter break. Morocco is also another fantastic choice if you’re looking to mix culture with the sunshine. And again you can enjoy excursions with fewer crowds and in a lot more comfort, as the cooler air makes sites more bearable.
Morocco holidays enjoy a huge amount of landscapes from the Atlas mountains to the bustling ancient cities, to the desert and out to the coast. And with so many international airports, getting there has never been easier.
Dubai is becoming more and more popular as a winter holiday destination. And it’s not surprising when in the summer the city can reach temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius! In my opinion their best weather is during the UK’s winter months. And holidays here are unforgettable, set on miles and miles of sand you can enjoy a 5* all inclusive beach holiday just a hop skip and a jump away from the bright city lights.
Increasing it’s appeal for families, Dubai is a great option for a family winter sun getaway. Resorts with kids clubs, and activities are just the tip of what’s on offer. A huge investment in the Dubai Mall area is opening up the city to the discerning family traveller.
A cruise holiday to Dubai is another option for those looking for value for money. Often the ships will stay in Dubai port for a few nights on the itinerary and per night with all your meals included can be fantastic value for money.
Douro River Cruise
Uncover one of Europe’s oldest and most renowned wine regions. You’ll cruise the Douro through some of the most ancient wine estates on the way to Porto and Lisbon. The daily views are dramatic and you’ll enjoy barcos rabelos laden with casks.
I love this twist on the winter sun holiday to Portugal, sit back and sail your way through the country. A really sublime part of Europe with amazing food and wine. And it’s all a short flight away.
La Palma – The Lesser Known Canary Island
At a training event recently I learned more about the island of La Palma, and how wonderful she seems! An authentic Spanish territory yet to succumb to the weight of tourists and a real island of adventure. From mountain trekking to star-gazing, water sports and everything in between. Here’s a video to show you more…
