In my time as an independent travel consultant, I’ve seen two shifts of gear in the market. The first is the rise of the solo traveller, the other is an increase in groups and multi-generation family holidays.
We help people every day, young and young in mind. The confidence people have is growing and it’s fantastic, it also lead us to starting Holiday Companions. We see people who want to celebrate milestone birthdays, or just take the whole family somewhere new. But the multi generation holiday is a tricky one. It requires finding a place to balance everyone’s interests with time together. Here are a few resorts and destinations we’ve found along our journey that we think could fit even the most diverse groups.
All Inclusive Luxury
There are a few resorts that cater for all in a luxurious fashion. We look at providers like Carrier, Inspiring Travel Company for our inspiration. The idea of what makes a “perfect family holiday” is different to everyone and you need bespoke service. The “one-size-fits-all approach” cannot apply. That’s why we listen to your unique preferences and hand-pick options for you. But here a couple we loved when we recently came across them.
5* Melia Dunas Resort, Sal, Cape Verde
The luxurious Melia Dunas faces the ocean, and has a boulevard brimming with places to eat and drink. This resort leads down to the white sands of Algodoeiro Beach. It’s huge – in fact, it’ll take around 15 minutes to walk from one side to the other – and is surrounded by tropical gardens. Santa Maria is just a few minutes’ drive away, too.
The Melia Dunas Resort is big on numbers. It comes with 3 swimming pools, one is exclusive to those staying in The Level adult-only rooms. There’s another pool just for children, too. As for dinner, there are four restaurants to choose from, including one with a menu of Indian* inspired dishes.
They have 2 and 3 bedroom suite options, which makes it a fantastic choice for those with older kids who want space and privacy. There’s plenty to do, with a spa, splash park, water slides, sports courts and even a cinema room!
5* Elounda Bay Palace, Crete
This modern 5-star hotel is surrounded by acres of gardens, overlooking the Mirabello Bay, just minutes from beaches and the fishing village of Elounda. A member of the Leading Hotels of the World, the popular Elounda Bay Palace sits on the seafront. It enjoys panoramic views of the picturesque mountains and Aegean Sea. Small and intimate beaches blend with a range of sports activities the whole family can get involved in.
The Emerging Destination
Amadria Park Resort, Split, Croatia.
the Amadria Park holiday resort, formerly known as Solaris resort, which comes with countless attractions and experiences. Amadria Park is all about fun and relaxation and is located on a 5km stretch of glorious pebble beach. Foodies can choose from a variety of eateries with plenty of gourmet delights on offer including the Dalmatian Ethno Village and Mediterraneo Steakhouse. Sports enthusiasts can take part in a variety of activities* and the En Vogue Beach Cluband spa areas are perfect for when you want to take it down a notch. When night falls, the Galley Ship hosts parties and firework displays.
Amadria Park Hotel Ivan is a wonderful choice for those seeking a property with style, luxury and a unique ambience. You have to be over 12 to stay here, so if you have grown ups in your group that are looking for a holiday within the group holiday this is a fabulous option.
And as it’s in the Split area there are some wonderful day excursions available too. Including the Krka National Park, where you can marvel at the natural wonders of cascading waterfalls.

La Manga Club
Covering an area the size of Monaco, La Manga Club is one of the most well-known and prestigious resorts in the world. No less than three championship standard golf courses, an internationally renowned tennis centre and an excellent soccer school for kids are just some of the reasons why devotees return year after year.
A paradise for sports enthusiasts, La Manga Clubs’ beautifully landscaped grounds, private beach and superb spa make it equally attractive to those simply looking to relax and unwind. Which is why we’ve chosen it for this blog.
La Manga Club provides the ultimate in entertainment and relaxation year-round. Whether you are looking for an apartment or townhouse where children can easily make friends, or a villa with private pool where you can relax in privacy. There are also a multitude of board options so you can be as independent or self sufficient as you like.
Villa Naomi, Albufeira, Portugal.
Villas are a tremendous option for multi-generation family holidays. Get a villa close to a busy resort and you have a base for everyone to do their own thing and then come back to enjoy time together.
Step inside Villa Naomi, a home equipped with all the mod cons. Found in the charming Sao Rafael, Algarve’s most beautiful spots are just moments away. Sleeping eight, there’s plenty of room for friends and family. The villa boasts five bathrooms – you’ll never be fighting for space – and the private pool is placed in a huge outdoor area with a barbecue, sunbeds and al fresco dining.
The popular resorts of Gale and Albufeira are just a short drive away and make for a fantastic days out. Albufeira has a fascinating old town and many boutique shops to explore, while Gale and the surrounding area of Sao Rafael offer a selection of delicious restaurants and bars to enjoy. If you fancy staying in on an evening, the cosy living/dining area and large kitchen are great for entertaining!
For Thrill Seekers
Walt Disney World
Taking grandparents and other extended relatives to the most magical place on Earth brings with it some truly special memories. Kids treasure the memories of riding their favourite rides with their grandparents, and parents love seeing the magic through their grandchildren’s eyes.
One of the biggest challenges of planning a multi-generational holiday is finding activities that everyone will enjoy. Every person will find a favorite Disney character whether they prefer Star Wars, Toy Story or Frozen. Even adults who aren’t especially into Disney movies and characters will enjoy activities like eating and drinking around the world at Epcot, trying thrill rides, shopping, hitting the water parks or going golfing. In our blog about Disney Destinations for Grown Ups we explore the options available for older guests.
Our top tip for a multi-generation trip is to plan, groups by nature will go at a slower pace, so planning is essential!
Of course there are many reasons to love a cruise holiday but if you’re looking for a multi-generational trip that satisfies the children with entertainment, and a parent’s desire to see the world, a multi-generational cruise holiday can be ideal!
As with all cruise holidays, it’s all about picking the right cruise. Pick the wrong cruise and you dramatically reduce the odds of everyone enjoying the trip. But choose wisely and everything should fall into place smoothly.
Cruise ships are crazy fun places with so many unexpected things to enjoy. With everyone doing different activities by day, you might never spend some time with certain members of your family. Get a plan in place. Such as big group dinners every other night. You balance together time with letting people be spontaneous with evening plans.
Picking a cruise line for your multi-generational family, depends on the family’s preferences. Check out our blog series, there’s a cruise line for everyone for an idea on what to expect.
