As we repeatedly say to our clients, there is a cruise line for everyone.

In our latest blog post about cruises it’s the turn of Celebrity Cruises. Another cruise line that the Holroyd’s are very familiar with. In 2016, we sailed the Celebrity Eclipse through Northern Europe to Russia. We explored 7 countries in 14 days, and enjoyed real modern luxury.

Celebrity Cruises was formed in 1988 and was bought into the Royal Caribbean family in the late nineties. Celebrity Cruises describe themselves as 5* Modern Luxury cruises and I would find it difficult to disagree. The ships are like a luxury hotel, they enjoy little details that elevate them above other mainstream cruise lines.

They are an American cruise line but have a sophistication that sets them apart. The atmosphere on board is very grown up and low key.

Who goes on a Celebrity Cruises cruise?

Many Celebrity passengers are moderately affluent and well-educated. Most are adults, but families with children and teens also enjoy Celebrity. Although some Celebrity passengers are first-time cruisers. Many are experienced travellers who appreciate quality and value and have sailed before. Ages range from 30s to 60s in high season, younger in the low season. Most Celebrity passengers get what they are looking for–something better than a standard mainstream cruise ship.

Celebrity Edge Class are a different ship from the rest of the Celebrity Cruises fleet. It was designed to attract first-time cruisers. Celebrity typically draws middle- and upper-class folks in their mid-40s and older. During school holidays, the ships see a number of families with children, The same may occur on Edge Class (although the ship has not been designed with families in mind).

When the ship is in Europe, you can expect to find a fairly international mix of passengers.

Do I have to dress up on a Celebrity Cruises cruise?

The dress code on Celebrity Cruises is resort casual most of the time. Most people wear whatever is comfortable to hang out by the pool or on the sun deck. Many of the indoor spaces are highly air-conditioned, so be sure to take a jumper.

At night, people tend to dress up a bit; women might put on a skirt and top or a simple sundress.  Men will don a pair of pants and a collared shirt. “Chic” nights are held twice per cruise, when cruisers will don their best. But you won’t see too many people in truly formal wear. Men might wear a suit or a sport jacket, but you won’t see any tuxes.

Do I have to buy drinks/ a drinks package on a Celebrity Cruises cruise?

Beverage packages allow cruisers to pre-pay a set price for (almost) unlimited soda, bottled water, beer, wine and spirits, rather than paying per drink while onboard. The number of beverage packages available on cruise ships can be bewildering. For those scheduled to sail on Celebrity, there are two drinks packages. The main two Celebrity Cruises drink packages are the Classic and the Premium packages.

On Celebrity, both Classic and Premium Beverage Packages include the following: unlimited sodas, fresh squeezed and bottled juices, water, tea, premium coffee, beer, wine, spirits, cocktails and frozen drinks. The packages also include a 20 percent discount on a bottle of wine.

The key difference between the two packages is price. Expect to pay between $40 and $55 per day for a Classic Package, while a Premium one will set you back at least an additional $10 per day.

If you’re not fussy about brand names and like a familiar beer and a quaffable wine, then the Classic Beverage Package sounds like the drink package for you.

If you’re a bit more adventurous with your beers, your palate is accustomed to a specific grape or if you have a penchant for a particular brand of spirit, then you are better off opting for the Premium Beverage Package.
